If you commit suicide while your thoughts are being controlled by someone else, is it really suicide, or is it murder? This is a question I’ve been thinking about after connecting the dots between three seemingly unlinked areas: parasites, artificial intelligence (AI) and brain-computer interfaces. As you’ll see, the three are much more connected than they first appear. And their combination throws up some interesting questions. Real-life mind control There is a species of fungus called Cordyceps that feasts on its host’s internal organs and then forces it to commit suicide. When it has eaten enough of the host’s organs it moves on to its brain. It takes control and tells the host to climb to the top of the nearest plant or tree, then clamp its jaws on a leaf and wait to die. After a short while the fungus then consumes the host’s brain, killing it, and bursts out of its head. After a few weeks of growth the Cordyceps releases its spores, which land on new hosts and the cycle continues. Thankfully for us, Cordyceps only attacks insects. And it lives in the jungle. However, it is so successful it can wipe out entire insect colonies. It was featured on Planet Earth in 2008. You can watch a short three-minute clip of it here. But be warned, it will leave you feeling uneasy. Another parasite, the lancet liver fluke, goes one better. This worm larvae lives in snail slime. When an ant eats this slime, the lancet liver fluke burrows into the ant’s brain and takes control of its mind. During the day the ant acts normally. But come evening, the ant will find the nearest blade of grass and climb it over and over again, until it is eaten by a grazing animal. If no animal comes along and eats it by the time the sun comes up, the ant goes back to its normal life… until the next evening when the process repeats itself. This strange cycle can continue for up to a year. When the ant is eventually eaten, it dies. But the lancet liver fluke moves to the animal’s liver where it lives out the rest of its days. While there the parasite produces more larvae which make its way out of the animal in its dung. Then a snail comes along and eats the dung. The parasite goes through the snail and is left in its slime trail. Then an ant comes along, eats the slime and ingests the parasite. The weirdest thing about an ant infested by the lancet liver fluke is that during the day it acts completely normal. It’s only at night that it becomes suicidal. There are many other parasites which do similar, crazy things to their hosts. Hairworms make crickets seek out water and drown themselves. Certain wasp larvae turn ladybirds into braindead bodyguards patrolling over wasp cocoons. Another species of wasp larvae invades the brain of its host caterpillar and cause it to whip about to scare off predators while the larvae’s siblings eat it from the inside out. Parasites are, frankly, terrifying. And the worst part is, we don’t even know how they achieve this mind control on their hosts. This article represents the culmination of an idea for which I laid the groundwork in my previous two articles. In “The real reason William Barr is committing crimes for Donald Trump,” I posited that Attorney General William Barr appears to be wholly unconcerned about the legal peril he has placed himself in – by lying to Congress, by obstructing justice, and so on – and that he told lies that he fully knew would be easy to discover and identify as lies. Genome sequencing has given rise to a new generation of genetically engineered bioweapons carrying the potential to change the nature of modern warfare and defense.
Introduction
Biological weapons are designed to spread disease among people, plants, and animals through the introduction of toxins and microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria. The method through which a biological weapon is deployed depends on the agent itself, its preparation, its durability, and the route of infection. Attackers may disperse these agents through aerosols or food and water supplies (1).
Although bioweapons have been used in war for many centuries, a recent surge in genetic understanding, as well as a rapid growth in computational power, has allowed genetic engineering to play a larger role in the development of new bioweapons. In the bioweapon industry, genetic engineering can be used to manipulate genes to create new pathogenic characteristics aimed at enhancing the efficacy of the weapon through increased survivability, infectivity, virulence, and drug resistance (2). While the positive societal implications of improved biotechnology are apparent, the “black biology” of bioweapon development may be “one of the gravest threats we will face” (2).
Limits of Past Bioweapons
Prior to recent advances in genetic engineering, bioweapons were exclusively natural pathogens. Agents must fulfill numerous prerequisites to be considered effective military bioweapons, and most naturally occurring pathogens are ill suited for this purpose (3). First, bioweapons must be produced in large quantities. A pathogen can be obtained from the natural environment if enough can be collected to allow purification and testing of its properties. Otherwise, pathogens could be produced in a microbiology laboratory or bank, a process which is limited by pathogen accessibility and the safety with which the pathogens can be handled in facilities. To replicate viruses and some bacteria, living cells are required. The growth of large quantities of an agent can be limited by equipment, space, and the health risks associated with the handling of hazardous germs (1). In addition to large-scale production, effective bioweapons must act quickly, be environmentally robust, and their effects must be treatable for those who are implementing the bioweapon (3).
Recent Advances
As researchers continue to transition from the era of DNA sequencing into the era of DNA synthesis, it may soon become feasible to synthesize any virus whose DNA sequence is known (4). This was first demonstrated in 2001 when Dr. Eckard Wimmer re-created the poliovirus and again in 2005 when Dr. Jeffrey Taubenberger and Terrence Tumpey re-created the 1918 influenza virus (1). The progress of DNA synthesis technology will also allow for the creation of novel pathogens. According to biological warfare expert Dr. Steven Block, genetically engineered pathogens “could be made safer to handle, easier to distribute, capable of ethnic specificity, or be made to cause higher mortality rates” (2).
The growing accessibility of DNA synthesis capabilities, computational power, and information means that a growing number of people will have the capacity to produce bioweapons. Scientists have been able to transform the four letters of DNA—A (adenine), C (cytosine), G (guanine), and T (thymine)—into the ones and zeroes of binary code. This transformation makes genetic engineering a matter of electronic manipulation, which decreases the cost of the technique (4). According to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, “the emerging gene synthesis industry is making genetic material more widely available […] A crude but effective terrorist weapon can be made using a small sample of any number of widely available pathogens, inexpensive equipment, and college-level chemistry and biology.” (5)

Techniques to Enhance Efficacy of Bioweapons
Scientists and genetic engineers are considering several techniques to increase the efficacy of pathogens in warfare.
1. Binary Biological Weapons
This technique involves inserting plasmids, small bacterial DNA fragments, into the DNA of other bacteria in order to increase virulence or other pathogenic properties within the host bacteria (2).
2. Designer Genes
According to the European Bioinformatics Institute, as of December 2012, scientists had sequenced the genomes of 3139 viruses, 1016 plasmids, and 2167 bacteria, some of which are published on the internet and are therefore accessible to the public (6). With complete genomes available and the aforementioned advances in gene synthesis, scientists will soon be able to design pathogens by creating synthetic genes, synthetic viruses, and possibly entirely new organisms (2).
3. Gene Therapy
Gene therapy involves repairing or replacing a gene of an organism, permanently changing its genetic composition. By replacing existing genes with harmful genes, this technique can be used to manufacture bioweapons (2).
4. Stealth Viruses
Stealth viruses are viral infections that enter cells and remain dormant for an extended amount of time until triggered externally to cause disease. In the context of warfare, these viruses could be spread to a large population, and activation could either be delayed or used as a threat for blackmail (2).
5. Host-Swapping Diseases
Much like the naturally occurring West Nile and Ebola viruses, animal viruses could potentially be genetically modified and developed to infect humans as a potent biowarfare tactic (2).
6. Designer Diseases
Biotechnology may be used to manipulate cellular mechanisms to cause disease. For example, an agent could be designed to induce cells to multiply uncontrollably, as in cancer, or to initiate apoptosis, programmed cell death (2).
7. Personalized Bioweapons
In coming years it may be conceivable to design a pathogen that targets a specific person’s genome. This agent may spread through populations showing minimal or no symptoms, yet it would be fatal to the intended target (4).
Biodefense
In addition to creating bioweapons, the emerging tools of genetic knowledge and biological technology may be used as a means of defense against these weapons.
1. Human Genome Literacy
As scientific research continues to reveal the functions of specific genes and how genetic components affect disease in humans, vaccines and drugs can be designed to combat particular pathogens based on analysis of their particular molecular effect on the human cell (2).
2. Immune System Enhancement
In addition to enabling more effective drug development, human genome literacy allows for a better understanding of the immune system. Thus, genetic engineering can be used to enhance human immune response to pathogens. As an example, Dr. Ken Alibek is conducting cellular research in pursuit of protection against the bioweapon anthrax (2).
3. Viral and Bacterial Genome Literacy
Decoding the genomes of viruses and bacteria will lead to molecular explanations behind virulence and drug resistance. With this information, bacteria can be engineered to produce bioregulators against pathogens. For example, Xoma Corporation has patented a bactericidal/permeability-increasing (BPI) protein, made from genes inserted into bacterial DNA, which reverses the resistance characteristic of particular bacteria against some popular antibiotics (2).
4. Efficient Bio-Agent Detection and Identification Equipment
Because the capability of comparing genomes using DNA assays has already been acquired, such technology may be developed to identify pathogens using information from bacterial and viral genomes. Such a detector could be used to identify the composition of bioweapons based on their genomes, reducing present-day delays in resultant treatment and/or preventive measures (2).
5. New Vaccines
Current scientific research projects involve genetic manipulation of viruses to create vaccines that provide immunity against multiple diseases with a single treatment (2).
6. New Antibiotics and Antiviral Drugs
Currently, antibiotic drugs target DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and cell-wall synthesis processes in bacterial cells. With an increased understanding of microbial genomes, other proteins essential to bacterial viability can be targeted to create new classes of antibiotics. Eventually, broad-spectrum, rather than protein-specific, anti-microbial drugs may be developed (2).
Future of Warfare
“The revolution in molecular biology and biotechnology can be considered as a potential Revolution of Military Affairs (RMA),” states Colonel Michael Ainscough, MD, MPH (2). According to Andrew Krepinevich, who originally coined the term RMA, “technological advancement, incorporation of this new technology into military systems, military operational advancement, and organizational adaptation in a way that fundamentally alters the character and conduct of conflict” are the four components that make up an RMA. For instance, the Gulf War has been classified as the beginning of the space information warfare RMA. “From the technological advances in biotechnology, biowarfare with genetically engineered pathogens may constitute a future such RMA,” says Ainscough (2).
In addition, the exponential increase in computational power combined with the accessibility of genetic information and biological tools to the general public and lack of governmental regulation raise concerns about the threat of biowarfare arising from outside the military (7). The US government has cited the efforts of terrorist networks, such as al Qaida, to recruit scientists capable of creating bioweapons as a national security concern and “has urged countries to be more open about their efforts to clamp down on the threat of bioweapons” (5).
Despite these efforts, biological research that can potentially lead to bioweapon development is “far more international, far more spread out, and far more diverse than nuclear science […] researchers communicate much more rapidly with one another by means that no government can control […] this was not true in the nuclear era,” according to David Kay, former chief U.S. weapons inspector in Iraq (7). Kay is “extraordinarily pessimistic that we [the United States] will take any of the necessary steps to avoid the threat of bioweapons absent their first actual use” (7).
“There are those who say: ‘the First World War was chemical; the Second World War was nuclear; and that the Third World War – God forbid – will be biological’” (2).

Jonestown, Guyana, was the scene of one of the most harrowing tragedies in American history. On November 18, 1978, at the direction of charismatic cult leader Jim Jones, 909 members of the People’s Temple died, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning, in a “revolutionary suicide.” They included over 200 murdered children. The poisonings in Jonestown followed the murder of five others, including Congressman Leo Ryan, by Temple members at the nearby Port Kaituma airstrip. It was the largest mass suicide in modern history and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until September 11, 2001. Richard Dwyer was deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Guyana when the tragedy took place. Was Dominique Strauss-Kahn Set Up?

I met on Sunday with an individual who gave me information not yet in the public domain about the unnamed chambermaid making allegations against the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director, Mr Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the intended main challenger to President Sarkozy as the next President of France. The person I met said, basically, that the woman involved in the allegation has a history of sexual dysfunctionality which makes here prone to making allegations after suggestive encounters towards men-not for attention seeking reasons but because of her own profile and background with relationships going back to her childhood. ‘’Because she is an immigrant her own background as a child may be hard to uncover and she is also in the unique position of having complete anonymity under US law-until she decides voluntarily to ‘cash in’ on this affair.’’ As the alleged victim,should anyone attempt to reveal her identity they too become liable to criminal prosecution. At this point, whether guilty or not, Strauss-Kahn is ruined politically and socially. ‘’The only people with the capability of unearthing the facts are the USCIS the FBI and the CIA and most likely all three agencies will be required to take a back seat as it’s a US Police local state (not Federal) matter and only the Justice Department will be involved.’’ As a Euro sceptic I have always been against most things which are EU-orientated. Indeed for many years I have supported an anti-European Union group as I share it’s sentiments-so I am the last person in the world to want to say any good words about the EU or it’s officials. Why would anyone want to ‘set-up’ Strauss-Kahn and who benefits from his absence from key talks about the Euro and it’s future hanging as they are in the balance? What would be the global implications of the collapse of the Euro as a single currency and how would it affect the dollar? Strauss-Kahn is undoubtedly a brilliant economist and visionary in his own field. He is singularly credited with saving the Euro from collapse by his ability to persuade Germany to buy into a rescue package with the prospect that it will emerge as the economic super-giant of the European continent when the European economies recover-which they eventually will. How would this emergence affect Europe’s relationship with the United States and the rest of the world? Let’s stick with the facts as known at present and remove the hype. Is it credible to believe that Mr Strauss-Kahn would, without being solicited, actively commit a sexual assault of the kind he is being accused of? The answer is currently unknown but as in the Julian Assange (WikiLeaks) case, there are troubling doubts-not about his guilt but about the scenarios of alleged guilt given the critical timings. ''Even if he is eventually proved to be guilty of attempted rape that does not preclude the possibility of him having being set up to commit a crime. Entrapment of high-profile individuals by rival companies and corporations is not unknown in the world in which we live.'' It is known that there have been prior issues affecting Mr Strauss-Kahn in his work environment and this alone is likely to heighten suspicions about his guilt-even before a fair trial. Already today an individual in France is alleging attempted assault and other individuals may see this as the time to also bring forward past affairs or grievances. ''These issues however were matters, as I gather, which could affect many co-workers working or travelling together for prolong periods of time and under great stress and should not have a bearing on any current accusation-but in this case they undoubtedly will-making it impossible for Mr Strauss-Kahn to be given a fair trial in the United States in the glare of media publicity which will now devour every aspect of the man’s private and public life.'' Back to the crises in Europe. Mr Strauss-Kahn is being replaced in these complex negotiations between economically ailing Euro zone countries and the IMF by someone who has only months of experience as a Deputy Director and lacks the charisma and ‘fixing’ abilities across so complex an economic structure which Strauss-Kahn is reputed to possess. Why is such an international high profile individual who cannot flee nor hide anywhere in the world being held in custody and not released on bail to continue his work-which is critical to the future of Europe? Even if he is released on bail or bond assurance, such is the damage done to his reputation that he may find it impossible to function in his current role at this critical juncture in EU-IMF relations such will be the detraction of this issue. This will have immediate effects on the course and direction of the negotiations-especially if European leaders lose faith in his credibility-which is highly likely. Of course everyone can be replaced-but in time. So the timing is critical in this instance. The Justice Department of The United States is fully aware of his role in IMF discussions aimed at saving the Euro and ensuring that Portugal, Greece, Spain and Ireland do not default so why are they not prepared to release him on bail in order that this work, vital to the unity of the European continent as an economic block can continue? They would quite rightly answer because he is being arrainged on a serious criminal matter and the issue of bail and bond is a matter for a judge at a hearing and is not the Justice Department's decision. In so high profile a case, The New York State Criminal Justice Department, the U.S. Justice Department and even The State Department could conceivably intervene with their own conflicting recommendations. The alternative interpretation of this event could be very troubling and not at all related to the alleged crime. Which currency, I was asked, most benefits with the collapse of the Euro as a single currency? ''The dollar has never been in a more precarious condition than it is today-under pressure from the Yuan. The emerging Russian Rouble is poised to affect the Eurozone in a way Strauss-Kahn has been working to positively and co-operatively pre-empt.'' Russia managed to prevent a global meltdown of its financial and industrial institutions several years ago when, what it perceived as an external conspiracy to place control of it's key strategic resources into the hands of hostile foreign corporations and place the country into a future situation of indebtedness was foiled. President Putin, a former intelligence officer, could never prove a conspiracy to bankrupt and seriously indebt the country so Russian authorities responded by promptly arresting and serving warrants for the arrest of all the oligarchs they could get within it’s own territory who were believed to be part of this unproven conspiracy and charged them on spurious economic crimes grounds-justified or not. Today, the Rouble is, like the Yuan, emerging as one of the future challengers to the Dollar-and the Euro-worldwide. Strauss-Kahn was involved in other delicate discussions-to bring the European Union and Russia into a closer economic union-and to persuade The German Chancellor Merkel to accept Turkey as a de facto associate member of the European Union with the issues of Cyprus and immigration being left for longer term settlement-should the Turks agree not to press for full membership. From what I gather, a complex man involved in intricate and complex issues profoundly affecting all our lives-now incarcerated in a U.S. jail and being paraded by U.S. Detectives from court hearing to court hearing as an indicted common criminal. The gut instinct of Chancellor Merkel and other European politicians will be to drop him like a stone as the political fall-out from having such an albatross could be even more damaging. No doubt many former colleagues will now try to distance themselves as far as possible from Mr Strauss-Kahn fearing the outcome on their own political careers. Strauss-Kahn’s impact as the most likely future President of France would have been even more profound. Even the incumbent President, Sarkozy, would admit he (Sarkozy) is not a brilliant economist. Having a man like Strauss Kahn running France and with German money and drive behind him, this powerful combination could have conceivably lifted Europe out of the economic recession faster than it will now take with the absence of so powerful an alliance of brilliance, brains, connections, fixing ability money and brawn - as all in unison would have effectively implemented an EU-structured Marshall Plan to save the economic union. Should any of the above prove true, (and I have been offered nor am offering any proof), then key personnel involved in critical aspects of EU policies may well be advised to take extra special precautions to avoid entrapment when on business or holiday trips abroad. If such proves to be the case, it would be reminiscent of the Cold War days when civil servants and other commercial and local government officials were expressly forbidden to travel behind the Iron Curtain without governmental permission It may well also be advisable to have a new set of rules governing the arrest of suspects so as to ensure that all are guaranteed protection from publicity under the law until conviction takes place as often the unproven allegations alone can destroy a life and a career. . The stakes are very high-a fact not appreciated by the general public since it's difficult to have access to a complete picture of exactly what is happening and how one issue affects another in a world where information overload creates as much confusion as it's paucity. Either this story represents the personal tragedy and the untimely end of a brilliant career of an individual who has succumbed to human failings at a most historically unfortunate time for Europe or a new, very vicious and very ugly chapter is emerging in the global fight for currency domination. I would hope that the former is the case so that one day Mr Strauss-Kahn and his victim will both be able to re-build their shattered lives and that the victim of this crime will see the justice she deserves. In conclusion, in the world we live, human failings and high public office do not go hand in hand. Is it any wonder that the most gifted and able individuals in this world avoid politics, high profile and public office like the plague.
